Abstract

This chapter explores the ways documentary photography was institutionalised as the photographic genre par excellence at the Museum of Modern Art, New York in an effort to create a niche for photography per se within a compartmentalised museum. It discusses shifts and turns in the appreciation of the photographic document during this museumification and how certain documentary practices were specifically excluded, only to be incorporated later in the new post-medium 'photographic' in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
